The Papa Pounamu Pre-Conference Hui is an annual signature event, held prior to the start of the NZPI Annual Conference. Since the formation of a Maori Special Interest Group within NZPI, the Hui has become a key event in which delegates and speakers come together to discuss key topical issues and advancement in Maori planning practice. In 2018, the Hui will be held on Wednesday 21st March, prior to the start of the main conference.
Papa Pounamu aims to create awareness, stimulate dialogue and critical thinking on planning issues unique to iwi, hapu, and whanau Maori.
This year the Papa Pounamu Hui themes are focused primarily on issues, projects and initiatives specific to the Bay of Plenty region including the MV Rena wreck, Special Housing Area development on treaty settlement lands and Maori design in spaces/places and restoring the Maketu estuary. For the first time we will be including a Pacific Island presentation on managing growth and infrastructure pressures in the islands.
There remains a strong emphasis on kaitiakitanga and continually striving for excellence and high quality outcomes in incorporating matauranga Maori into urban and environmental resource management.
The full day programme is free to attend but you must register as spaces are limited.
