Rohan Bush and Jamie Forsman spoke about Auckland Council's initiatives to support Māori housing in Tāmaki Makaurau under the proposed Auckland Unitary Plan.

Session: District Plans & Joint Agency Groups as Facilitators of Papakāinga

Local Authorities can either hinder or assist in the development of Māori housing projects and, alongside the Māori land Court, Te Puni Kokiri, social housing agencies and Iwi, have the capacity to form Joint Agency Groups (JAG) to provide effective Whole of Government Māori housing support. This session focuses on best practise district plan provisions for Māori housing and guidance on how to develop better partnerships between Council, housing stakeholders and Māori housing providers.


Whanganui Iwi and Te Matapihi he tirohanga mō te iwi Trust hosted the 3rd National Māori Housing Conference in Whanganui from May 1-3 2014. The conference attracted over 150 delegates, with presentations including Māori housing success stories from across the motu as well as reports from all key housing agencies on the social housing reforms. The Hon. Tariana Turia Associate Minister for Housing was present at the conference and announced the new rural Māori housing fund as part of her keynote address.
