Residential Tenancies Amendment Bill (No 2) Submission
This bill amends the Residential Tenancies Act 1986 to address issues related to liability for damage to rental premises caused by a tenant, methamphetamine contamination in rental premises, and tenancies over rental premises that are unlawful for residential use.
The Bill passed its First Reading on 4 July 2017 and was been referred to the Local Government and Environment Committee for consideration. Submissions on the bill closed at midnight on 22 August 2017. The Bill will now progress to Select Committee stage.
Although we support the aspects of this bill that promote the provision of safe, healthy
rental accommodation, we are likewise concerned that some of its provisions may lead to
unintended or compounded negative social impacts on some whānau.
We have spoken to these concerns in our submission, with recommendations on improvements that can be made to strengthen the proposed legislation.
