He Whare Āhuru He Oranga Tangata (The Māori Housing Strategy) was presented in 2014 under then housing minister Hon Nick Smith alongside Hon Tariana Turia. The strategy sets out to achieve two major outcomes and six directions over the period of 2014 to 2025 - these major outcomes include improving housing for Māori and their whānau, and increasing housing choices for Māori by growing the Māori housing sector. Pictured below is a graphic that illustrates and notes these major outcomes and directions (image sourced via Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment).

Through the major outcomes and directions outlined in the Māori Housing strategy the government has a firm direction on how to enable Māori housing projects to flourish throughout te motu. In delivering on the directions of the Māori Housing strategy whānau are provided with opportunities to improve housing situations and realise their housing aspirations, while Māori organisations are also being given scope to assist in creating more housing choices for Māori across the housing spectrum.
