Te Matapihi Board Responds to the Announcement of Kāinga Ora Governance
Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities board appointments
Housing minister Megan Woods has announced the appointment of five board members to oversee Kāinga Ora, a newly formed Crown agency comprised of Housing New Zealand, HLC, and Kiwibuild.
Five foundation board members have been appointed to the Kāinga Ora – Homes and Communities board. This leaves a maximum of three additional board members to be appointed by 1 January 2020. Notably there are no Māori board members at this stage, though there is a requirement under legislation for board members to have knowledge, experience and capability in relation to the Treaty of Waitangi and Te Ture Whenua Māori.
It is important that the Kāinga Ora board has strong Māori representation to ensure that Māori housing interests are advanced. As of 1 October, Kāinga Ora will replace Housing New Zealand and Homes Land and Community (formerly the Hobsonville Land Company) and will assume responsibility for the delivery of KiwiBuild. As the government’s primary delivery arm for housing, Kāinga Ora will be instrumental in progressing Māori housing outcomes. Therefore, Te Matapihi encourages suitably experienced candidates to put forward an expression of interest to the Minister of Housing, Hon Megan Woods.
