Whanganui National Māori Housing Conference 2014 - Ben Potaka and Ken Mair Presentation

Ben Potaka and Ken Mair presented their housing project at Pungarehu Marae on the Whanganui River. The Te Urumingi Whanau Ahu Whenua Trust received grants for research and experimented with mixing pumice from its land with cement to make building blocks. They were tested at Unitec in Auckland and found to have the same insulation value as pink batts.

Whanganui Iwi and Te Matapihi he tirohanga mō te iwi Trust hosted the 3rd National Māori Housing Conference in Whanganui from May 1-3 2014. The conference attracted over 150 delegates, with presentations including Māori housing success stories from across the motu as well as reports from all key housing agencies on the social housing reforms. The Hon. Tariana Turia Associate Minister for Housing was present at the conference and announced the new rural Māori housing fund as part of her keynote address.
