A Te Matapihi Contribution to the Housing Works Magazine

This Resource is to keep you up to date with our advocacy within the Māori Housing Sector. This article is a contribution from our Lead Policy and Engagement Advisor, Wayne Knox who shares the strong values that underpin our organisation, while also detailing its future ambitions as New Zealand’s peak body for Māori housing.

Te Matapihi is now looking ahead, toward working with ministers, agencies and the Māori housing sector to leverage this window of opportunity. Although we are close to ticking off a couple of items from our to-do list, if anything, the list has grown and includes:

  • Addressing the impediments to developing housing on Māori collectively owned land, foremost of which is access to finance;

  • Increasing Māori housing capability within the sector;

  • Furthering Māori housing research to ensure initiatives have a strong evidence base;

  • Promoting the development of a sector-led National Māori Housing Strategy;

  • Strengthening our relationships within the sector;

  • Co-designing a suite of policy initiatives with agencies and the sector that support all Māori to access kāinga ora
