Kāinga ora - Homes and Communities Bill

As a National Peak Body for Māori Housing, it was imperative that Te Matapihi provided a submission to the Environment Committee for the Kāinga ora - Homes and Communities Bill

The committee identified a number of organisations who they considered to have specialist knowledge, represent a specific industry that the bill may impact, or represent a significant known interest. To assist the committee with its consideration, members agreed to invite a number of these organisations to provide written evidence and appear at a public committee hearing.

The Environment Committee agreed to invite Te Matapihi to make a submission on the bill. July 17, Te Matapihis General Manager supported by our Lead Communications Advisor, appeared before the select committee to speak to our submission.

Details from the submission acknowledged the proposed name ‘Kāinga ora’ emphasising that this term must be understood in its customary sense. It also addressed Māori Interest, the Functions of Kāinga ora - Homes and Communities Bill, and the proposed Government Policy Statement.
